United People Ibadan Sapphires is a team of champions committed to initiating community impact projects and advocate for achieving quality education, gender equality and environmental best-practices in Ibadan community and its environs. Education has been described as one of the most powerful and proven vehicles for sustainable development in any society. The United People Sapphires is passionate about education for all in Nigeria, one of the countries with the highest number out-of-school children in the world.
Moreover, the effect of gender inequality in education is significant, and has resulted in many girls being victims of or at the risk of domestic and sexual violence, child trafficking, child abuse, adolescent pregnancy, unsafe abortions, STIs and other infectious diseases. Furthermore, education is essential in encouraging climate action. The Paris Agreement was ratified by nations in order to combat climate change and keep the increase in global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius. Nigeria, along with other West African nations, has been identified as having the lowest level of enthusiasm for climate action among other regions of Africa.
Hence, the initiatives of United People Ibadan Sapphires are geared towards implementing the SDGs 4, 5 & 13 at the community level through literacy projects and awareness campaigns. Educating youths, especially young girls, particularly from rural communities empowers and inspires them to take initiatives. Young girls, for instance, can learn about the effects of global warming, how to adapt to climate change in the classroom and in turn be inspired to take action and pioneer climate action initiatives. Educating women on climate change and other related issues heightens the preparedness of the community and promotes disaster risk management. Ultimately, youths who are educated and empowered often become drivers of social change in their communities, thereby contributing to its resilience.
